The protein bar aisle is not as healthy as it looks. Flip over most bars and you will find a lineup of ingredients that have no business being in something marketed as food. Here are five things we left out of DBARZ, and why we left them out.
1. Sugar Alcohols Like Erythritol and Maltitol
These show up in almost every "zero sugar" bar on the market. They keep the calorie count low and the marketing claims clean, but they ferment in your gut and cause bloating, gas, and that strange cooling sensation you get after eating something that is technically sweet but feels completely wrong. The tradeoff is not worth it.
What we use instead: Date paste. Real sweetness from a real fruit, with fiber that actually slows digestion the way it's supposed to.
2. Artificial Sweeteners Like Sucralose, Aspartame and Ace-K
Lab-made, bitter on the back end, and increasingly linked to disrupting how your body processes real sugar over time. They exist in bars because they're cheap and hit the sweet spot on a nutrition label. That's the only reason.
What we use instead: Naturally sourced sugars from whole foods. Nothing your body hasn't seen before.
3. Gums and Fillers Like Xanthan Gum and Carrageenan
They're used to create texture and bulk without adding calories or cost. They also irritate the gut lining in a lot of people and bring zero nutritional value to the bar. Filler is filler, whatever you call it.
What we use instead: Whole ingredients that create texture on their own. Nuts, protein, date paste. Nothing added to fake it.
4. Soy Protein Isolate
Highly processed, often genetically modified, and harder to digest than most people realize. It's the cheap option and it tastes like it. You can usually tell when a bar is built around it.
What we use instead: A blend of whey and milk protein isolate. Complete amino acid profile, smooth texture, easy on digestion.
5. Natural Flavors That Are Not That Natural
This one matters more than most people know. "Natural flavors" is a legal catch-all that can include hundreds of synthetic compounds as long as they originated from something natural at some point in the process. It's a loophole, and a lot of brands lean on it hard.
What we use instead: Actual ingredients with actual flavor. Cocoa, nut butter, sea salt. If it's in the bar, it's on the label.
You Deserve to Know What You're Eating
We make bars that taste like dessert and are built like real food. No gut bombs, no fine print, no ingredients you need to research before deciding if they're safe.
